Love Notes From Our Family Plant Nursery

Plant Nursery

Welcome to Our Green-Filled Family Notes

Caring for houseplants should feel calm, grounding, and personal, not overwhelming. That is exactly how we run The Houseplant Shop, our family-run online plant nursery in Elanora Heights, Sydney, and how we write every word you read here. This blog is a love note from our home to yours, led in voice by owner Tiara Cool and gently co-signed by her daughter, who has grown up with soil under her fingernails and leaves brushing her shoulders.

You might have spotted a different name on older posts. From now on, every blog, social caption and care guide will be signed in spirit by Tiara Cool, not Chanelle, so you always know who is speaking to you. In this note, we will share who we are, what is growing in our plant nursery in Elanora Heights, Sydney, how to care for favourites like succulents, cacti, flowering plants, Monstera, Ficus and variegated varieties, and how our plant hotel keeps your indoor jungle thriving while you travel. Settle in with a cuppa and think of this as a chat across the potting bench.

Meet Tiara Cool and the Heart Behind Our Plant Home

The Houseplant Shop began with sunny corners, second-hand pots and a small collection of houseplants that kept multiplying because Tiara simply could not stop rescuing and styling them. Friends started asking for help with their own homes, then for plants themselves, and before long those home styling moments grew into an online plant nursery serving our local community and beyond. Our base is in Elanora Heights, where the sea breeze, light and laid-back pace quietly influence how we choose and care for plants.

Every plant, pot and crystal in our store is chosen by Tiara and her daughter. We wander through new stock together, asking a few simple questions:

  • Is this plant healthy and full of potential?
  • Will it be happy in real Australian homes, not just styled photos?
  • Which pot shape and colour will show off its personality?
  • Which crystal or decor piece will complete the corner it ends up in?

We also wanted to clear up any confusion around names. If you have seen Chanelle mentioned anywhere, please read that as Tiara Cool. The voice behind our blogs has always been the same person who is watering, repotting and chatting to plants in the nursery. When you read our posts, we hope it feels like a message from a fellow plant lover, not a faceless shop. If you like to multitask, keep the website open nearby while you read so you can spot the actual plants we are talking about.

Inside Our Current Collection of Lush Houseplants

Our online shelves and nursery benches are always moving, but there are a few plant groups you will almost always find in our care. At any given time, our plant nursery in Elanora Heights, Sydney, is likely to be home to:

  • Succulents and cacti for sun-soaked windowsills and low-fuss plant parents
  • Flowering indoor plants that bring colour and perfume to sideboards and desks
  • Bold foliage icons like Monstera and Ficus that claim entire corners
  • Variegated gems, with splashes, speckles and stripes, for collectors and colour lovers

The exact varieties change with the seasons and with what looks strongest and happiest at the time. We are picky, and we choose plants that cope well with indoor conditions and the quirks of Australian weather, like bright summer light and cooler winter nights.

Alongside the plants themselves, we keep a steady rotation of pots, including self-draining planters that make life easier for anyone still learning their plant’s watering rhythm. As we add more to the range, we are also building individual home care guide blogs for each category, written by Tiara Cool, so you can always look up tailored help for the plants you own or are eyeing off.

Home Care Guides for Succulents, Cacti and Flowering Plants

Succulents and cacti are often the first stop for new plant parents. They are forgiving, but they have clear preferences:

  • Water: Give them a deep drink, then let the soil dry out completely. In cooler months, stretch the breaks between waterings even more.
  • Light: Aim for bright light, with some direct sun where possible, such as a north-facing window. Avoid tucking them into dark shelves.
  • Roots and pot size: Many have shallow, spreading roots that prefer snug pots. Only repot when roots are clearly crowding the base.
  • Drainage and pot choice: These plants hate sitting in water. Use self-draining pots with proper holes, filled with a gritty cactus and succulent mix.
  • Fertiliser: During the warmer growing months, feed lightly with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser, then stop feeding through the cooler season.

Flowering indoor plants ask for a little more attention but repay you with colour:

  • Water: Keep the soil lightly moist, not soggy. After a big flush of blooms, ease back the watering slightly to let the plant rest.
  • Light: Most prefer bright, indirect light. Strong midday sun can scorch delicate petals, so shield them with a curtain or move them slightly back from the window.
  • Roots and pot size: Many flower best when their roots are a little snug. Move up just one pot size when roots start circling heavily.
  • Fertiliser: Use a balanced, bloom-boosting liquid fertiliser through the growing season, pausing in winter or between flowering cycles.
  • Drainage: Again, self-draining pots are your friend. Wet feet can shut down flowering quickly.

When you explore the range online, you will see individual succulents, cacti and flowering plants ready to match with pots that suit these care notes, so you can set them up for success from day one.

Home Care Guides for Monstera, Ficus and Variegated Varieties

Monstera plants, including deliciosa and similar types, are the gentle giants of the indoor jungle. To keep them happy:

  • Water: Let the top few centimetres of soil dry before watering. In cooler weather, you may find you water far less often.
  • Light: They love bright, indirect light. Too much harsh sun can cause yellowing or brown patches on those iconic leaves.
  • Roots and pot size: Monstera grow strong roots that like stability. Repot every year or two into a slightly larger pot and add support, such as a stake or moss pole, to encourage upright growth.
  • Fertiliser: Feed regularly with a balanced liquid fertiliser in the growing season for lush, green growth.
  • Drainage: Use a rich, free-draining mix in a self-draining pot so water never pools around the roots.

Ficus, like fiddle leaf figs and rubber plants, have a reputation for being fussy, but clear, steady care keeps them happy:

  • Water: Aim for evenly moist soil. Avoid wild swings between bone dry and soaked, which can trigger leaf drop.
  • Light: Provide bright, filtered light away from drafty doors or heating vents. Dark corners will not keep them happy.
  • Roots and pot size: They prefer pots that are slightly snug. When repotting, move up just one size and refresh the mix rather than jumping into a huge container.
  • Fertiliser: Feed lightly during warmer months, then pause in winter when growth slows.
  • Drainage: Good drainage is essential. Combine quality potting mix with pots that have proper holes.

Variegated varieties are the divas of the plant shelf, but they are worth it:

  • Light: Their white or cream patches have less chlorophyll, so they need extra bright, indirect light to keep those patterns strong.
  • Water: They are often less tolerant of extreme dryness or sogginess. Keep moisture steady and avoid letting them sit dry for long stretches.
  • Fertiliser and drainage: Gentle, regular feeding and excellent drainage support their more delicate foliage and growth.

If you are curious about what is currently available, searching the shop for words like Monstera, Ficus or variegated will show you Tiara’s current favourites.

The Plant Hotel and Holiday Care for Your Indoor Jungle

One of our favourite services is the plant hotel, our version of a holiday home for your leafy family. When you are travelling, you can book your plants in for supervised care where we water, check light levels and, if needed, offer a little fertiliser at the right time. It suits anyone heading away for several days or weeks, especially those with sensitive plants, big collections or treasured variegated pieces.

The basic process is simple:

  • Book a spot ahead of time so we know how many plants are coming.
  • Drop them off, ideally with a quick rundown of their usual care.
  • We create a tailored care plan based on plant type, light needs and watering habits.
  • You collect them after your trip, returning to plants that have been monitored rather than left to chance.

For locals near the plant nursery in Elanora Heights, Sydney, this can be a real relief. If the plant hotel is not an option, there are ways to help your plants cope while you are away:

  • Watering: Give all plants a thorough drink before you leave, letting excess water drain fully. Consider self-watering spikes or capillary mats for thirstier varieties.
  • Light: Move plants to stable, bright, indirect light away from very hot windows. Less intense but steady light is safer while you are gone.
  • Grouping: Cluster plants together on trays with pebbles and a shallow layer of water to gently lift humidity without soaking the roots.
  • Pots and drainage: Check that every plant is in an appropriately sized, self-draining pot with fresh, free-draining mix where needed. This reduces the risk of rot.
  • Time frames: Many succulents and cacti can manage for longer stretches with a good pre-trip soak, while flowering plants and big-leaf tropicals tend to need support if you will be away for more than a short break.
