Holiday Peace of Mind for You and Your Plants
Leaving home for a holiday or a work trip should feel exciting, not stressful. Yet if your indoor jungle is quietly relying on you for water, light, and care, time away can quickly turn into a source of worry. Missed watering, curtains left closed, heatwaves, cold snaps and dry indoor air can all add up to droopy leaves and sad-looking plants waiting at home.
At The Houseplant Shop, we created our Plant Hotel so you do not have to choose between a getaway and keeping your plants in good shape. This article is the first part of a three-part series on our Plant Hotel: here we explain what a plant hotel is and how it works; in part two we talk about plant spa upgrades like repotting and soil checks; and in part three we guide you through preparing your plants for check-in and check-out. Whether you visit us in person or you are already used to services like houseplant delivery in Sydney, our Plant Hotel is here to support your collection long after you first bring it home.
What a Plant Hotel Is and How It Works
A plant hotel is exactly what it sounds like: a short or long stay home away from home where plant specialists care for your indoor plants under controlled conditions. While you are away, your plants stay with us in a space set up specifically for plant health, not for people. That means consistent light, stable temperatures, and an environment designed entirely around leafy guests.
Our Plant Hotel is ideal for anyone whose normal routine is about to be disrupted. It is especially helpful for:
- Holidaymakers heading off on short breaks or extended trips
- FIFO and remote workers who are away for stretches of time
- People between homes or renovating who cannot keep plants on site
- Anyone expecting extreme weather that their home might not buffer well
The core service is simple: each plant is placed in an area with the right kind of light, checked for its moisture needs and added to a watering schedule that suits its species, size and pot. We monitor humidity and airflow, keep an eye out for pests, and perform daily visual checks so we can respond early to any sign of stress, from drooping leaves to subtle colour changes.
Booking your plant in is straightforward. When you enquire, we ask a few key questions:
- Plant type and size
- When it was last watered or fed
- Its usual light conditions at home, such as bright indirect light near a window or low light in a corner
- How long you expect to be away
We then confirm suitable dates and discuss how you prefer to handle drop-off and pick-up. Because plant health is our priority, we also treat safety and hygiene seriously. New arrivals are checked carefully, and if we spot anything that looks suspicious, we can keep them separate while we assess. Tools are cleaned between jobs, and we work thoughtfully to reduce the chance of pests ever spreading between plants.
Premium Care in the Houseplant Shop Plant Hotel
Our Plant Hotel is not just a watering roster. It is a chance for your plant to enjoy what is effectively the best indoor plant care environment we can offer in Australia, with experienced staff watching over it every day. While you are away relaxing or working, your plant is on its own break from inconsistent home conditions.
Daily and weekly care might include moisture checks before every watering, adjusting light position as needed, and rotating pots so growth stays even and compact. If a plant starts to sulk, droop or yellow, we can respond quickly, rather than waiting until problems become severe. Your plant is never just left on a shelf and forgotten.
Different plants have very different personalities, and we factor that into their stay. Low light lovers are kept away from harsh direct sun, while sun seekers have the brightness they crave without scorching. Humidity-loving tropical plants are given access to moisture in the air, while hardy succulents and cacti are kept in drier conditions and are protected from overwatering. Our experience as an online plant and lifestyle store means we work with a huge range of species and care needs every day, so the knowledge we apply when sending out houseplant delivery in Sydney is the same knowledge we rely on in the hotel.
We also value communication. If you like, you can request photo updates during your trip, especially if you are away for longer. At the end of the stay, we can provide a brief check-in report outlining what care your plant received, how it responded, and any recommendations we have for extra treatments, either as you pick up or for next time.
Plant Spa Upgrades for Soil, Roots and Growth
A hotel stay can be more than just a safe place to sleep; it can be a full spa experience. The same applies to our Plant Hotel. While your plant is with us, you can choose a range of optional upgrades to refresh its soil, check its roots and fine-tune its overall health.
Repotting is one of the most popular upgrades. If your plant has roots circling the bottom of the pot, pushing out of drainage holes or forcing the plant up and out, it might be time for a bigger home. During a repot, we remove the plant gently, assess the root system, trim away any damaged or rotting roots, and tease out tight root balls so the plant can grow more freely. You can request a bigger pot at the same time, which is a great way to support future growth while your plant is in expert hands.
Soil changes are another powerful reset. Old mix can become compacted, tired or unsuitable as a plant matures. We can refresh the soil completely or switch to a more specific blend, for example a chunkier mix for aroids, a gritty blend for succulents, or a moisture-retentive mix for ferns and other thirsty species. This can improve drainage, aeration and nutrient availability, which all feed into better long-term health.
For plants that are a bit fussy, soil pH can make a surprising difference. Some species react badly if their soil becomes too acidic or too alkaline. We can test pH levels and, if results show they are out of balance, adjust conditions using appropriate amendments. To support growth in a controlled way, we also offer fertiliser sessions. Rather than guessing at home and risking fertiliser burn, we select suitable products for the plant type, time feeds properly during the stay, and keep an eye on how the plant responds.
Preparing for Check-in and Enjoying a Healthy Return Home
A little preparation before drop-off helps your plant settle in quickly. In the 48 hours before check-in, we generally recommend:
- Do not overwater to compensate for your absence
- Skip last-minute repotting or major pruning
- Note any recent changes, such as drooping, spotting or pests
- Gather any decorative pots you want your plant to return home in
Sharing information about your plant is incredibly helpful. Tell us where it usually lives, how often you water, any fertilisers you have used recently, and whether you have dealt with pests in the past. If pets or kids affect where your plant can safely go at home, mention that as well, so we can keep this in mind when we suggest care tips later.
Getting plants to and from the hotel safely is similar to what people already do when they arrange houseplant delivery in Sydney. Secure pots so they do not tip in the car, protect leaves from doors and windows, avoid leaving plants in a hot vehicle, and keep taller plants upright. When it is time to bring your plant home again, we provide a quick handover chat, run through the care it received and point out any changes we noticed, such as new growth, stronger colour or emerging issues that need monitoring.
Once home, try to reintroduce your plant gently. If we have adjusted its light or watering routine, make gradual changes rather than sudden shifts. You might decide to give it a new spot that better matches what it enjoyed in the hotel, tweak your watering based on our observations, or even upgrade pots and decor to suit a happier, healthier plant. Over time, a Plant Hotel visit can become a helpful reset that keeps your indoor space lush, personalised and thriving, no matter how often you need to head away.
