How to grow: This bunching onion is easy and low-fuss. Sow seeds about 1 cm deep, either directly where they are to grow or into trays to transplant later. It's happy in full sun or part shade and tolerant of most soils, though it does best in well-drained ground. Keep the soil moist while the seeds germinate, which takes around one to two weeks. Thin or space plants to about 5 cm apart. Unlike bulb onions, this variety is grown for its tender stems, so you can start harvesting once the plants are pencil-thick. Snip what you need and the plant keeps regrowing for a continuous supply. Good companions include carrots, kale and lettuce, and its scent helps deter carrot pests.
