How to grow: Sunflowers are one of the easiest and most rewarding crops for kids and beginners. Sow seeds in spring and summer once the weather is warm, about 2 cm deep, directly where they are to grow, as they resent transplanting. Choose the sunniest spot you have with well-drained soil, and shelter from strong wind, or stake tall plants to stop them toppling. Keep the soil moist while the seeds germinate, which takes one to two weeks. Thin or space plants to around 30 to 40 cm apart. Water regularly through the growing season. The cheerful flowers follow the sun and draw in bees, and once the flower heads dry you can harvest the edible seeds. Good companions include cucumber and calendula.
