Rubber Plant

Position your Rubber Plant in a spot with bright, indirect light to keep its foliage glossy and its burgundy tones vivid; too little light leaves growth leggy and pale, while harsh midday sun can scorch the leaves. It appreciates a warm, draught-free position away from cold windows and air-conditioning, and enjoys a little extra humidity, so an occasional misting or a wipe of the leaves with a damp cloth keeps them dust-free and breathing well.

Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, allowing excess to drain freely and never letting the pot sit in water, as Ficus elastica dislikes soggy roots. Ease back on watering through the cooler months when growth slows. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every few weeks in spring and summer to support new leaves. One quirk to note: the milky sap can irritate skin and is mildly toxic if chewed, so wear gloves when pruning and keep it out of reach of curious pets and children.
