Nepenthes

Nepenthes is a carnivorous plant that needs specific care but is very rewarding. Give it bright, indirect light, and some gentle morning sun helps it produce more and better-coloured pitchers, but keep it out of harsh midday sun. It craves high humidity, so keep it in a humid spot or mist regularly, as dry air stops it forming pitchers. Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy, and importantly use rainwater, distilled or filtered water rather than tap water, as it is very sensitive to the minerals and salts in tap water. Keep it warm and away from cold draughts. It catches its own insects, so it needs no feeding, and never use ordinary fertiliser or potting mix, as these can harm it. A hanging position suits it best so the pitchers can hang freely.
