How to grow: Lettuce is quick, easy and perfect for beginners and pots. Sow seeds shallowly, about 5 mm deep, either directly where they are to grow or into trays to transplant. It grows best in the cooler parts of the year and prefers a spot with full sun to part shade, especially some afternoon shade in warmer weather to stop it bolting. Keep the soil consistently moist, as lettuce has shallow roots and dislikes drying out. Seeds germinate in about one to two weeks. Thin or space plants to around 20 to 25 cm apart, or grow closer as a cut-and-come-again crop and pick the outer leaves as needed. Sow little and often for a continuous supply. Good companions include carrots and radish.
