How to grow: Dill is easy and best sown directly where it is to grow, as it has a long taproot and dislikes being transplanted. Sow seeds shallowly, about 5 mm deep, in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Keep the soil moist while the seeds germinate, which takes one to two weeks. Thin plants to around 20 to 30 cm apart. Dill can grow quite tall, so a sheltered position stops it flopping. Harvest the feathery leaves as needed once the plant is established, and let some flower heads form if you want to collect the aromatic seeds for pickling and cooking. The flowers attract beneficial insects and pollinators. Good companions include cucumber and lettuce.
