How to grow: Watermelon needs warmth, sun and space. Sow seeds about 0.5 to 1 cm deep directly where they are to grow, from October through February once the soil is warm and all frost has passed. Choose the sunniest spot you have with rich, well-drained soil and a pH around 6.5 to 7.5. Keep the soil moist while the seeds germinate, which takes one to two weeks in warm conditions. Space plants around 1m apart, as even this bush variety needs room to spread. Water deeply and regularly while the vines grow and fruit sets, then ease off a little as the melons ripen to concentrate the sweetness. Feed through the season. The fruit is ready when the underside turns creamy yellow and it sounds hollow when tapped. Good companions include beans and pumpkin.
