How to grow: Kale is one of the toughest and most forgiving crops, ideal for beginners. Sow seeds about 1 cm deep, either into trays to transplant or directly where they are to grow. It grows year round but is at its sweetest in the cooler months, and a light frost actually improves the flavour. Give it a spot with full sun to part shade and rich, well-drained soil. Keep the soil moist and feed for lush leaves. Seeds germinate in one to two weeks. Space plants around 40 to 50 cm apart. Harvest by picking the lower outer leaves as a cut-and-come-again crop, and the plant keeps producing for months. Good companions include beans, dill and onion.
